Our Urban Dominant Strategy is a “business model for growing with local communities” by enhancing the appeal of the whole area with the stores at its core. Implementing the strategy helps attract more customers to the area and contribute to the area.
We will also promote initiatives to vitalize local economy including expansion of products produced locally for local consumption and support for local festivals.
Ginza Six, one of the largest commercial complexes in the Ginza area, which opened in April 2017, contributes to attracting more customers to the area with carefully selected 241 world-class quality brands, the unconventional store environment using art, customer management and analysis using ICT, and promotion creating a buzz and conscious of being spread on SNS. It also contributes to improving convenience and comfort and disaster prevention function in the area with a cultural and exchange facility “Kanze Noh Theater,” the Ginza area’s largest rooftop garden, a bus station, the “Tourist Service Center” and the environment that accepts stranded people in the event of a disaster.
The “Ueno Frontier Tower,” which opened in November 2017 as a new complex with Parco_ya, a cinema complex and offices, attracts new visitors including young people and office workers to the area. The “Ueno-ga-Suki (lit. We love Ueno) Station,” which serves as a tourist information center that provides information on the area, sells goods and holds events, was created on the 1st basement floor (the Matsuzakaya Ueno store). In the “Okachimachi Panda Hiroba,” various events are regularly held in collaboration with the government and the neighborhood shopping street.
The Daimaru Kobe store has developed shops around it since 1987, about 30 years ago. Cutting-edge fashion brands are invited to open their boutiques in exotic buildings in Motomachi, Kobe, which historically developed as a foreign settlement, to attract more customers to the area. Currently approximately 60 shops operate around the store and the area combining shopping and sightseeing attracts customers from a wider area. The store organizes events using the appeal of the Former Foreign Settlement on a regular basis. In March 2017, Vogue’s shopping event “Vogue Fashion’s Night Out” was held. It was held in spring for the first time in the world.
In 2016, Daimaru opened the “Daimaru Kyoto Store Gion Machiya” as a special project celebrating the 300th anniversary of its foundation. In Gion, which has a taste of the old capital, we revived a dilapidated machiya (a Japanese traditional townhouse) and operate a luxury brand boutique that matches Kyoto, which combines “tradition” and “innovativeness” (Hermes from November 2016 to July 2017 and Hublot from August 2017). By preserving and using the machiya, we inherit historical value and contribute to revitalizing the area. And we are well received by people in Japan and abroad as well as residents in Kyoto.
In March 2018, we renovated an over 100-year-old hotel and opened “Blue Bottle Coffee Kyoto Cafe” with Blue Bottle Coffee in the Nanzenji area, which is a key sightseeing destination in Kyoto. We will continuously strive to find appropriate properties for the “Kyoto Machiya Project.”
“Local production for local consumption” helps revitalize the local economy. It also helps reduce environmental load because CO2 emissions from transportation and refrigeration decrease due to short transportation distance. Each of the Daimaru and Matsuzakaya stores organizes events to provide a wide range of products including food, clothing and crafts and expand their sales.
The Daimaru Kobe store concluded a “partnership agreement concerning the revitalization of local communities and the promotion of lifelong learning” with Kobe Gakuin University and held a signing ceremony in the Port Island Campus of Kobe Gakuin University on July 5, 2018. Their nine partnership items include co-organized projects to foster the creativity of children, support for the next generation, the promotion of education and human resource development, disaster prevention and reduction, and regional development and the resolution of regional issues.
Marking the 20th anniversary of its grand reopening after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake (the “Earthquake”), the Daimaru Kobe store “looked back at the 20 years when it has been supported by local people and developed with local communities and wanted to take actions so that the store can further contribute to revitalizing local communities and society.” As such, the store has pursued partnership with Kobe Gakuin University.
Mr. Sato, the President of Kobe Gakuin University, introduced the “Motomachi Kodomo Daigaku (lit. Motomachi college for children),” which started as an advance project. He also told that Kobe Gakuin University, as a university closest to the epicenter of the Earthquake, has pursued education and studies concerning local disaster prevention and reduction ahead of the rest of the country in order to apply the lessons learned from the Earthquake to education. According to him, these initiatives lead up to today as the “Department of Social Studies of Disaster Management of the Faculty of Contemporary Social Studies,” which was established in 2014, and the University will implement community-based initiatives in partnership with the Kobe store.
The Matsuzakaya Nagoya store and National University Corporation Nagoya University concluded a partnership agreement in May 2017. The purpose of this agreement is to enable mutual collaboration between Nagoya University and the Matsuzakaya Nagoya store in the fields of culture, industry, education, academics and so on with the aim of contributing to the development of the local region and human resources. Beginning with the research on the revitalization of the Sakae area using ICT, we will implement various initiatives that contribute to service innovation and the development of local appeal toward the “creation of Nagoya, a hospitable city in information services.”
Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores supports festivals in the regions where its stores are located.
The Daimaru Kyoto store has a special display related to Gion Matsuri Festival and sells related goods every year. During the Festival in July 2018, the dragon’s head on the bow of Ofune Hoko float, which rejoined the Festival after 150 years’ absence in 2014, was displayed in the show window next to the Shijo front entrance on the first floor.
In the Hakata Daimaru Fukuoka Tenjin store, about 11-meter-high Kazari Yamakasa float “Tenjin 1-chome” of Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival was built in the passage open space between the main building and the East Hall Elle Gala. Shoppers and tourists feasted their eyes on it.
